Optimizing your Sunroom for the Summer

As summer approaches, many homeowners are looking for ways to maximize their outdoor living space. If you have a sunroom or porch fill-in, you’re in luck – these versatile spaces offer a great way to enjoy the outdoors while still staying cool and comfortable.

Here are some helpful tips for optimizing your sunroom or porch fill-in space this season.

Keep it cool: Enjoy your sunroom or porch fill-in by keeping it cool. This can be done by installing ceiling fans, using blinds or shades to block heat from the sun’s rays and by creating airflow with a cross breeze by keeping windows open on either end. Keeping airflow moving and providing shade will help keep you cool on really warm days.

Choose the right furniture: When it comes to choosing the right furniture for your sunroom or porch fill-in, it’s important to consider who is using the room and how it’s being used? Is your room being used as a cozy family space to read, nap and snuggle in or is it an overflow space off of a pool area where wet bathing suits will come in and sit on the furniture. Choosing the right materials will help create the vibe and versatility of the space.

Create zones: If you have a large sunroom or porch fill-in, consider creating different zones for different activities. For example, you could set up a dining area for meals, a lounging area for reading or napping, and a play area for kids. By creating distinct zones, you’ll be able to use your space more effectively and accommodate multiple activities at once.

Go Green: Plants add life and color to any space and a sunroom or porch fill-in is no exception. Consider adding potted plants or hanging baskets to bring a bit of nature indoors. Not only will plants improve the aesthetics of your space, but they’ll also help purify the air and create a more relaxing environment.

Lighting goes a Long Way: As the sun sets, you’ll want to make sure your sunroom or porch enclosure stays well-lit. Consider adding outdoor lighting fixtures, such as string lights or lanterns, to create a cozy ambiance. You could also install dimmer switches to adjust the level of light depending on your needs.

By following these tips, you can make the most of your sunroom or porch enclosure this summer. Whether you’re hosting outdoor dinners, enjoying a good book, or just lounging with family and friends, your sunroom or porch enclosure can be the perfect space for outdoor relaxation and entertainment. If you’re looking for a sunroom or porch fill-in to enjoy over the summer, give Eastern Shore Sunroom a call today.

Keeping Your Sunroom Cozy this Holiday Season

As the seasons change and temperatures get a bit cooler, it’s that time of year when we may not spend quite as much time outdoors. Enjoying your thermal sunroom space is a perfect way to enjoy the outdoor views comfortably. Making your space feel comfortable and cozy during holiday entertainment is always easy by adding simple home decor trends.

  1. Keep a basket or blanket ladder handy with plaid throw blankets and cozy knits. Keeping throw blankets easily accessible for guests while entertaining in the winter months makes a midafternoon hangout or nap so much more comfortable. Curling up in the warmth of a throw blanket while playing board games or enjoying a sunrise with a cup of coffee in hand are simple, but enjoyable and memorable experiences.

  1. Choose soft materials for your throw pillows that are easy to fluff up and stay warm when sitting beside or laying on. Fabrics like chenilles, knits and flannels are a great way to add warmth and ultimate cozy vibes to your space.

  1. Add natural accents to your room. Incorporating simple accents like wood bowls, a unique driftwood art piece and large pinecones; can add a woodsy and rustic feel to a room.

  1. Get playful! Board games and cards are a mus thave. Whether you display them or tuck them away in a drawer, having boardgames on hand when entertaining guests is a must. Children and adults alike love to cozy up and gather to play a hand of Uno or a round of Scrabble. Having easy to access entertainment sets a relaxed feel for your guests and of course, a little friendly competition throughout the holidays is never a bad thing.

  1. Add a little shimmer and shine. You can never go wrong with twinkling lights. Whether you have beautiful green foliage on a mantle or a Christmas tree in the corner, adding twinkle lights to your space during the holidays adds a little bit of magic and whimsy to any room. If you don’t have any live plants or Christmas trees in your space, consider adding birch branches and dog wood to an urn and twisting twinkle lights in them.

Incorporating these ideas into your sunroom decor will add festive flare and coziness to your sunroom this winter. Don’t forget to have hot cocoa or cider on hand to warm cold hands, it’s always the perfect finishing touch.

Decorate Your Perfect Halloween Sunroom

With Halloween just around the corner, you might be wondering how you can turn your sunroom into a spooky space to enjoy the holiday. Well, look no further! Here are some ideas on how you can decorate your sunroom for Halloween night.

Decorations

Decorations are the most important part of Halloween. Most of us love creating a spooky atmosphere so we can watch our favourite Halloween classics like Hocus Pocus, A Nightmare Before Christmas, Halloweentown and so much more. So what can you do to create that atmosphere?

Let’s start with the windows. When any trick or treater approaches your house, the first thing they notice are your windows. Why not bring them to life with some fun decorations?

You can get foam boards, paint them to look like wooden boards and “nail” them over your windows to create a haunted house look. Another idea is to get construction foam and create a cathedral window silhouette to turn your home into a creepy castle. Some more simple ways to decorate your windows is to buy spider webs, creepy sheer drapes and get some Halloween decals to hang in your windows. All of these will make a good impression not only on trick or treaters but anyone who visits your home in October.

Now let’s talk about the inside of your sunroom. There are a few simple ways that you can make it cozy yet festive. Find some Halloween pillows and throw blankets then place them around your sunroom. You can also grab some Halloween themed lights to create the perfect mood lighting for when the sun goes down. All of these decorations will help create a cozy spot for your family to hang out.

To take things a step further, you can add creepy things such as bats, snakes, spiders and other animals that are festive to the holiday. You can also add skeleton parts to your potted plants, under furniture and other things to make it look like skeletons are coming out of them.

Halloween Night

You can spend your Halloween night doing a bunch of different things but here are two ways to create a perfect family night in your sunroom.

The first way is to throw a Halloween party. One of the best parts of Halloween is to figure out what costume you want to wear for the night. Whether it be a zombie, princess or something entirely different than anyone has ever seen. So pick your perfect costume to set the mood for the night.

Grab some pumpkins, carving kits and set up a spot for your guests to create jack-o-lanterns. You can even hold a competition to see who has the best pumpkin or you can choose to just have fun with it.

You can’t forget the Halloween treats! Stock up on a bunch of candy, put them into bowls and place them around your sunroom to allow your guests to grab candy from everywhere. You can also create some homemade treats such as Halloween themed cake pops, haunted gingerbread men, cupcakes and so much more. The possibilities are endless!

The second way you can spend your Halloween night is a night in with your family. Put on some cozy pyjamas, grab your favourite snacks and cuddle under your cozy blankets. Make a list of all your favourite Halloween movies and watch them together.

There’s nothing better than spending time with your family in the perfect Halloween sunroom so don’t wait. Go create the perfect spooky space for you and your family today!

How to Maximize Temperature Control and Privacy of your Sunroom

Sunrooms are a great addition to almost any property, provided there is enough space for one. Even if you don’t have a large backyard, you can turn your existing porch / deck into a sunroom. It’s a room which requires some consideration in order to enjoy optimal light and heat during its times of use. A sunroom is another dwelling space where you might have some valuables. You may be wondering how to secure and protect those valuables from both the natural elements and/ or theft.

Sunrooms are durable, but if you want to enjoy them to the fullest and secure them as well as maximize the lifespan of your sunroom, we encourage you to check out our next few tips on how to maximize temperature control and privacy of your sunroom.

Tinted Windows or Screens

Probably one of the simplest methods to block out excess heat is tinting your windows. Some sunroom owners prefer to only tint the top of their windows and use screens which adjust how much sun the room gets at any given time. If you tint your windows, it is permanent until you remove the tints. A low-level tint is recommended in most cases because it will still allow most of the sun/heat in but give you a sense of privacy. You can also use low-E glass coatings which will still let plenty of sunlight in while protecting you from the most harmful UV rays and heat. Additionally, it helps protect your furniture. Tints are great when planned and applied correctly.

Blinds

Blinds are an affordable feature you can add to your sunroom to help optimize the temperature. Blinds can be fairly simple and give you good control over how much sunlight you want to allow into your sunroom, thereby controlling the heat on some of the hottest days. Enjoy the light while filtering some of that heat and provide an additional layer of privacy. Installing blinds is also a great way to show your creative side and refresh the look of your sunroom. It really is one of the top choices when it comes to light/heat control as well as privacy.

Ventilation

In the warmer months, the hot air from outside can cause a stuffy atmosphere inside and not only makes for an uncomfortable setting but can also cause damage to your valuables as well. Installing a ceiling fan and / or standing fan will assure proper air circulation so the hot air doesn’t linger and make you feel suffocated. Ventilation is key when it comes to sunrooms/solariums. You do not want all of that hot air “standing” in one place, making it impossible to breathe in your sunroom and risking the state of your furniture. Ceiling fans or standing fans also push hot air out of the room through vents to eliminate the problem altogether. Proper ventilation is an inexpensive but necessary component of your sunroom in order to control the temperature during those hot summer days.

Sealant

During the summertime overheating is not the only concern for sunrooms. This is the season when you will encounter the most bugs and other pests in your space. In order to minimize / stop insects from making their way into your sunroom, you should properly seal your windows and screens. Decent sealant will not only ensure uninvited insects stay outside but also help insulate the room better, keeping the temperature exactly how you like it. Additionally make sure to check your screens for any tears or small gaps.

Locks

Understandably, security can be of great concern to many when it comes to protecting your home. Therefore it is very important to properly lock your sunroom whenever you are not using it. You do not want uninvited guests to enter nor do you want the elements like wind to potentially blow the door open. A proper lock can help keep your sunroom safe when you’re not around.

Cameras

Additionally a basic security camera with motion sensors and infra-red can give you peace of mind when you’re not home but want to keep an eye on your property. Cameras can also act as a deterrent to criminals who may be looking for ways to enter your home. Security cameras are very affordable nowadays and usually come in a bundle so you can use them around you house as well allowing you to feel safe and protected at all times. Another option is to install an audible sensor alarm on the top of the door and when the door is open, a loud screechy alarm will sound, once again deterring anyone trying to enter.
